Karelia University of Applied Sciences is joining Business Joensuu as a new shareholder. Karelia UAS and Business Joensuu cooperate actively in promoting competence and business activities in Joensuu and the entire surrounding region. The UAS becoming a shareholder will further deepen this cooperation. With this arrangement, all education and research organisations in the region will be part-owners of Business Joensuu.

Business Joensuu provides services for the growth and internationalisation of companies, launching new companies and attracting investments in the Joensuu region. The company also offers Science Park facility and event services. Karelia University of Applied Sciences is involved in building the success of companies by educating skilled professionals and working closely with companies in the region in diverse development and research projects.

– Karelia and Business Joensuu share common goals and bring complementary expertise to the table. In the context of our active partnership, our cooperation has already been close in many areas, such as the SPARK Joensuu student entrepreneurship community and, most recently, the MEE ecosystem programme where we are working together to develop competence in wood construction and photonics as well as business, among other things. Now we are ramping everything up, says Petri Raivo President of Karelia University of Applied Sciences.

– Our experts work together daily and our shared set of expertise is unique. Without education and research in the region, it would be challenging to support companies’ growth and development. Karelia UAS plays a key role in the success of companies in the region. In addition, increasing cooperation and broadening our shoulders is a valuable goal for the entire region in and of itself”, adds Business Joensuu CEO Harri Palviainen.

In the shareholder arrangement, the City of Joensuu is selling some of its shares to Karelia University of Applied Sciences. After the arrangement, the owners of Business Joensuu Oy will be the City of Joensuu, the University of Eastern Finland, the Joensuu University Foundation, the North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium Riveria and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. The company has service contracts with seven municipalities encompassing 120,000 people and 6,500 companies. The company’s offices are located in Joensuu, Heinävesi, Ilomantsi, Outokumpu and Polvijärvi. It also produces some regional services and actively engages in national and international cooperation.
