According to a survey conducted in June for employer companies in the Outokumpu, Polvijärvi and Kaavi regions, companies in the region are currently investing and believe that they will employ more than 100 new employees between 2020-2023. According to the survey, the most intense period of the corona epidemic in the spring did not undermine the faith companies have in the future.

The survey was carried out by Business Joensuu Oy in cooperation with the City of Outokumpu, Polvijärvi and the municipality of Kaavi. The survey was sent in June by e-mail to all employer companies in the region of the above-mentioned municipalities, a total of 206 companies. The address source used was that of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and the trade register of Business Joensuu. Responses were also collected through a round of phone calls. A total of 118 responses were received which means that the response rate was approximately 57%.

The results of the survey show that 39 companies estimate that their business growth will allow them to employ at least 100, possibly up to 175 new employees in 2020-2023. Only 7 companies estimated that the number of employees in their company will decrease. The need for decreasing personnel in total for these companies is 15-33 people. This means that up to 100-150 jobs might be created.

– The results of the survey are encouraging. Even though the mining company Boliden is preparing to stop activities at the Kylylahti mine in Polvijärvi and Luikonlahti refinery, the recruitment needs of companies in the Outokumpu, Polvijärvi and Kaavi regions will compensate for this. The vitality of the region does not seem to depend solely on the activities of the mine and the refinery, says Tuomo Roivas, the Service Director at Business Joensuu.

Based on the information collected from companies, there is demand for very different types of employees. These include different occupations on the metal industry such as machinists, welders, assembly fitters, injection moulding technicians, machine supervisors and various maintenance workers. On the service industry, there is demand for chefs, opticians, driving instructors, driving school secretaries, salespersonnel, sales and marketing experts and sales directors. In logistics, some future positions include excavator, forestry machine and truck drivers.

Recruitment event for employees of the mine

At the end of August, the Outokumpu Industrial Park and the mining company Boliden will organise a recruitment event in cooperation with the City of Outokumpu, Polvijärvi and the municipality of Kaavi to give the workers of the mine opportunities to meet with employer companies in the area. The event will be held in the Outokumpu Industrial Park. Companies in Outokumpu, Polvijärvi and Kaavi who are interested in the recruitment event can contact Business Joensuu.

– Business Joensuu can help companies in different ways to hire new employees. Tuomo Roivas encourages companies to get in touch.
